Soil Water Accumulation

This product shows the calculated soil water content in inches available in the soil at specific locations since the planting date of a crop (in this case corn planted on May 1). The data available for maps like the one shown in this example are collected daily and the map can include all information through midnight of the previous day.

The red line shows inches of soil water at the field capacity; the blue line shows the soil water content below which crop stress will occur; the green line shows the actual soil water content after taking account of rainfall and crop water use. This information can be used to determine whether there is adequate water in the soil for crop growth, whether you should irrigate, and when to schedule fertilizer and herbicide applications. For example, certain fertilizers work the best when the field has adequate amount of soil water. Thus, knowing the soil water conditions in the field can help producers decide if it is appropriate to apply fertilizers.
